Create a Classroom Mail System
A good communication system is important, and saves precious
class time. Every student should have a mailbox. Creating a
class mailbox sculpture out of decorated cardboard containers
such as shoeboxes and oatmeal containers can be fun, add color
and texture to the room, and provide a special place for each
individual including the teacher. Be sure the decoration includes
a clearly written name on the inside bottom of the container.
Once containers are decorated, have students place them around
one another, keeping openings to the outside of the sculpture.
Use bright colored tape to connect the pieces until all boxes
are attached. Strive for a balanced and interesting organization.
Assign a mail person each week to deliver mail at specified
times. Any student can send mail to any other student in the
classroom. All mail is delivered in envelopes, with addresses
written according to the skill level of the class. (paper folded
in thirds and addressed will be delivered.) Imaginative stamp
design is encourage. Upper grades should use complete addresses
and return addresses.
