These activities are simple ways to engage students in building a classroom community. The beginning of the year is a time to build community in a classroom, and set expectations for classroom tone. When students are involved in creating the classroom structures, routines and procedures they are more likely to respect their teacher, classmates and materials. Use these activities throughout the year to promote active learning, where students are responsible for their learning and teachers provide challenging and yet achievable goals.
