Human Clay

In pairs:

  • Partner #1 close eyes and stand, kneel, sit, or lie down in a relaxed, balanced pose.
  • Partner #2 gently move one body part of #1 at a time, to sculpt #1 into a statue.
  • Be sure #1 is balanced at all times, and give gentle, whispered verbal directions as is helpful.
  • Switch roles.

In a group:

  • Half the class stand in a “clump” in the middle of the room, back to back, eyes closed.
  • The other half walk around slowly, moving the individuals into higher, middle, and lower positions to create a group statue.
  • Walk around the sculpture noticing those levels and relationships that tell a story or are particularly pleasing.
  • Switch roles.

Use as story starters:

  • Take photographs of the statues if a camera is available. Use the photos of the
statues as story starters for oral or written composition.
