Newspaper Music

Newspaper Music

Created by Alison Kenny-Gardhouse, ConnexionArts

  1. Listen to a short piece of music and describe the musical elements that are heard in the piece, such as loud/soft (dynamics), slow/fast (tempo), instrument sounds (tone color), high/low (pitch), long/short (duration), pattern (rhythm), steady beat, style, and so on.

  2. In groups of 3 or 4, each group create a composition inspired by what they heard and described. The piece has to have at least three different ways of using the newspaper and must have a beginning, middle, and end.

  3. Groups perform for one another. Remind them what is expected of performers and audience members.

  4. Reflection: Think about three things you saw or hear that you liked. Think about one way that your composition or performance could have been better by using an idea from another group.
