Prepare:
1. Remove the pages of the book Zoom,
by Istvan Banyai; Puffin; Reprint edition (July 1998) ISBN:
0140557741
2. Shuffle the pages and set aside (hide) a few for
later.
Activity:
3. With black sides up, have each student choose one
page (no peeking), and then go around again until all pages
are distributed.
4. Tell students they are to turn the pages over when
you signal, and they are to put the pages in order. The one
rule is that no one can say anything not a word or
a whisper. Then give the signal.
5. Students arrange the pages on the floor or desks.
Teacher: Bite your tongue, and just watch. You will learn
a lot about your class as they work. Who are the linguistic
communicators? Who are tactile? Who are leaders? Who hold
back and watch? Who can see the visual cues? Who are problem
solvers? Who have interpersonal skills and are aware of the
group dynamics? Who is completely self-centered?
Debrief/Reflection:
6. When students indicate that they are finished,
check the work, then sit together and discuss the following:
a. What did you do?
b. How did you do it?
c. What did you learn from doing it?
d. What skills did you use?
e. What skills do we need to develop to work better
together?
f. How can we remind ourselves about these skills?
